Jeolla Do Large Leaf
Red Mustard, 적갓
Brassica juncea
We are working to increase our Jeolla Do seed stock and will not have availability in 2023.
Red mustard variety selected for their strong flavor and hardy texture. Radiant purple leaves with pronounced mustard flavor, well suited for Gat Kimchi, a regional specialty of Jeolla Do. Super hardy, their coarse leaves deter pests, and stand up to fermentation and aging processes.
Approx. Seeds per Packet: 200
Developed from a wild mustard in Korea, this variety has been selected for deep purple coloring, large leaf and pink petioles. Coarse leafed, with a delicious pungent mustard flavor, it's primarily used for mustard kimchi, a specialty of Jeolla Do province. It's hardy constitution also makes it fairly resistant to most pests in the field.
Days to Maturity: 50-60 days from emergence
Growing Tips: Mustard greens are cool season annuals. In our climate we grow them through fall and winter, as colder temperatures help sweeten the leaves and temper the stronger mustard flavor. While longer days and warm temperatures will result in fast germination, too hot of temperatures can slow early growth. Not fussy in their fertility requirements, plants mostly just need well drained soil.
When to Plant: Direct seed in early spring or fall. Germinates with temperatures between 60-65F and generally enjoys and thrives in temperatures up to 85F. Can tolerate occasional freezes. Can be started indoors throughout winter or in late summer in 128 cell trays.
Planting Depth: ¼”
Spacing: Direct seed at a rate of about 6 seeds/ft. Once established plants should be given 10-12”
Sun: Sunlight affects pigmentation, so direct light for at least half the day will produce more vibrantly purple colored leaves.
Water: Low to moderate. For the most part we can rely on even inconsistent rains in the winter and spring to provide ample moisture. If irrigating during summer months in cool but dry climates, infrequent moderate watering will do.
